Biden’s plea to billionaire Democrats before announcing 2024 run: President, 80, will court rich donors to bulk up his war chest as speculation swirls over when he will officially enter the race

President Biden is forging ahead with plans for a 2024 campaign – despite concerns about his age – as he eyes up wealthy Democratic donors to court in the coming weeks.

Biden is expected to formally announce his bid for the presidency after the Feb. 7 State of the Union address.

So far Donald Trump is Biden’s only opponent in the race. Trump announced his campaign in November and potential Republican challengers have held off on making any formal decisions.

The president will need to seek out high-dollar donors from Wall Street and the tech industry – fields his administration has sometimes vilified – to match the over $1 billion war chest he amassed last election cycle.

In 2020 Biden was the first presidential candidate to ever raise over $1 billion as he battled Republican incumbent President Donald Trump.

The Democratic National Committee will also need to raise money to help defend a tough congressional map in 2024 that includes defending Senate seats in Ohio, West Virginia, Arizona and Montana.

Outside groups raised another $580 million for Biden in 2020. Aides are divided over whether to rely on a super-PAC this time around for outside help, and, if so, which one, sources tell Reuters.

The 2024 campaign trail will look far more busy for Biden, who spent much of the 2020 trail hosting virtual fundraisers from his home. This time around he’ll have to not only attend traditional campaign stops and fundraising events but also tend to his official duties as president at the same time.

Still, not all Democrats are sold on another Biden run. On Tuesday progressive Rep. Ro Khanna said a more business-friendly Democrat could challenge Biden in a primary.

On NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ on Sunday, Sen. Joe Manchin did not rule out a presidential bid in 2024.

‘I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that when I make my decision, I make it on based on what’s best, what I think I can do to support, and best for my country and my state,’ he said.

‘I haven’t decided on anything I’m going to do until I see the lay of the land is going to be at that time,’ Manchin added.
