Republican says she WON’T back Kevin McCarthy’s bid to throw Ilhan Omar and Eric Swalwell off committees because it is a ‘charade’ – and Congress needs to stop being a ‘circus’

GOP Rep. Victoria Spartz of Indiana called for an end to ‘bread and circuses’She’s the second Republican who signaled they’ll vote against removing OmarMcCarthy can unilaterally boot Reps. Swalwell and Schiff off the Intelligence committee, but removing Rep. Omar from Foreign Affairs may need a vote

A Republican congresswoman blasted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s threats to boot three outspoken Democrats off committees on Tuesday.

Indiana Rep. Victoria Spartz dismissed the GOP leader’s efforts as ‘bread and circuses’ and called on him to ‘start governing for a change’ in the searing statement.

McCarthy has vowed to remove Democrat Reps. Eric Swalwell and Adam Schiff of California from the House select committee on Intelligence, while threatening to remove progressive Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar off the Foreign Affairs Committee.

It’s payback for Democrats voting to strip hard-right GOP Reps. Paul Gosar of Arizona and Marjorie Taylor Greene of George of their committee assignments in the last Congress.

‘Two wrongs do not make a right,’ Spartz said on Tuesday.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has vowed to boot three left-wing lawmakers off of key committees after Democrats voted in the last Congress to strip GOP Reps. Paul Gosar and Marjorie Taylor Greene of their assignments

Indiana conservative Rep. Victoria Spartz condemned McCarthy’s threats on Tuesday

‘Speaker Pelosi took unprecedented actions last Congress to remove Reps. Greene and Gosar from their committees without proper due process.’

She then accused McCarthy of doing the very same thing now.

‘I spoke against it on the House floor two years ago, I will not support this charade again,’ Spartz said.

‘Speaker McCarthy needs to stop “bread and circuses” in Congress and start governing for a change.’

Meanwhile, Democrats have signaled that they’re ready to call McCarthy’s bluff.

On Sunday, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries wrote a letter to McCarthy formally renominating Swalwell and Schiff to the intelligence panel.

And on Monday, Omar wrote a letter to House Democrats’ steering committee – which is responsible for allocating panel assignments – officially asking to once again serve on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

But despite McCarthy’s repeated promises to keep all three off of their committees, he may run into trouble booting at least one of them.

McCarthy has unilateral power to keep or remove nominees from Intelligence due to its status as a select committee.

In Omar’s case, however, removal would require a full House vote – and McCarthy can only afford to lose the support of four members with his razor-thin Republican majority.

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina indicated that she will also likely oppose Omar’s removal if it comes to a House vote.

‘I’m going to treat everybody equally,’ she told CNN. ‘I want to be consistent on it.’
